Carl Brashear

Carl Brashear is America's first African American Navy Master Diver, the highest dive qualification that you can receive in the U.S. Navy.  After loosing his leg in an underwater mission to find and recapture a lost nuclear warhead of the coast of Spain,  the Navy sent his medical discharge papers.  He refused to sign them and learned to use a prothetic leg during diving exercises and trained for the Master Diver certificate. Sylvia Earle

The fourth sculpture to be featured in the Vuam series is that of Sylvia Earle.  Since 1998 she has been a National Geographic explorer-in-residence. Sylvia Earle was the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and was named by Time Magazine as its first Hero for the Planet in 1998.  The Vuam series is a collection of sculptures focusing on prominent ocean pioneers.  The sculptures are  currently in California and have been featured on the grounds of the Google headquarters in Mountain View, California.  Viktor the sculptor lives and works out of the South side of Chicago. Hans and Lotte Haas

The third sculpture to be featured in the Vuam series is that of Hans and Lotte Haas.   Hans and Lotte Haas were a husband and wife team who created over a hundred underwater films and documentaries.  Hans spent most of the time behind the camera and Lotte spent most of the time in front of it.  Both were pioneers in underwater documentary film making and were great rivals with the famed Jacques Cousteau. Lloyd Bridges

A few years back, Monumental Art Works' sculptor, Viktor, created a series of large busts carved from granite focused on ocean pioneers and explorers.  The name of the series is called Vuam.  The second sculpture to be featured  in our Vuam series is Lloyd Bridges.  That's right, Lloyd Bridges from great comedies such as AIRPLANE!, was also an advocate for the American Oceans Campaign, Heal the Bay and other Aquatic environmentalism.  Viktor the sculptor lives and works out of the South side of Chicago. A few years back, Monumental Art Works' sculptor, Viktor, created a series of large busts carved from granite focused on ocean pioneers and explorers.  The name of the series is named Vuam.  The first sculpture to be featured  in our Vuam series is Phil Nuytten.  As you see in the top picture in the collage, the initial shape of Phil Nuytten can be seen in the giant granite block. A throwback from one of Viktor's masterful works - The Angelcrest Cemetery Angel of Valparaiso, Indiana.  The giant 10 foot tall block of granite on the left, over some hard worked time, was turned into the incredible work of art that is now the Angelcrest cemetery centerpiece.  The likeness of Viktor's statue can also be seen in the cemetery's logo.

Today we are giving a quick sneak peek into the craft of granite work.  Creating art out of a granite block is an involving process that takes, tools, time and a great amount of expertise.  Monumental Art Works will be presenting many videos, pictures and articles about this beautiful process as an ongoing effort to educate, inform and serve the general interested public through digital means. This first collage of pictures shows the sandblasting tools of the trade.
